After a trip in the Night Train from busy Bangkok trough lush green Forrest we arrived at Chiang Mai at 8 am. I chose Mapping Hostel because of it's beautiful location right by the riverside of Mae Nam Ping River, it's a little outside the city center which I personally like. The girl at the reception was very friendly, there's nothing better than beeing greeted by a warm smile.
Now beeing a graphic designer, I like Places that feature a specific style, some kind of design concept. It doesn't have to be posh to have style or charm. Mapping Hostel doesn't satisfy my interior design dreams but it has it's own charm comming from small details. The best thing about it is definitely the little back garden right by the riverside. Comming from noisy Bangkok just sitting here in the cozy bamboo huts enjoying the peacefull view is great.
There are dorms as well as single rooms and even tent beds in the back garden with mosquito nets, I'd like to try these out but for our first night we chose a mixed 8 A/C Dorm with bunk beds. Bed Sheets are handed to you on check in, there are safety deposite lockers and a common fridge. Everything a backpacker could need is there.
Even tough it's frontside is close to a busy road our room was not noisy, there are inside and outside showers and western toilets in relatively clean standarts - the inside shower I used had a lot of ants in it but they didn't bother me too much. After all we only paid 159 Baht (4.50 Swiss Franks) for the bed. After about 15 min of walking you're in the main city area. There are a view caffee's and restaurants on the way.
I would recommand Mapping Hostel because of the lovely backyard and the nice staff.
